Om Birla Vs K Suresh for Lok Sabha Speaker
New Delhi: There will be an election for the post of the Lok Sabha Speaker’s post for the first time as the ruling BJP-led NDA and the opposition failed to reach a consensus. This is the first time in country’s parliamentary history that the opposition has set up a contest for the key constitutional post.
BJP MP Om Birla on Tuesday filed his nomination for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker as the NDA’s candidate. Congress MP K Suresh also filed his nomination for the post of Speaker as the pick of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc.
According to sources, the INDIA bloc fielded eight-time MP K Suresh as the NDA was not ready to give the Deputy Speaker’s post to the Opposition.
The election for the post of Speaker will be held at 11 am on Wednesday.
The government had deployed Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju to build a consensus on the Lok Sabha Speaker candidate after the opposition INDIA bloc said it was considering its options.
