BHUBANESWAR:Principal Secretary of Water Resources department Anu Garg has asked the officials to remain alert in view of the low pressure that will bring more rain by 15th September.

Garg, during a review meeting here, asked the concerned engineers to control the water level of reservoirs as a flood-like situation might occur in southern Odisha. She said the Met department has predicted that the low pressure will trigger torrential rain in Andhra coast, south Odisha, and Chhattisgarh.

During the review meeting, it was discussed that Indravati, Upper Kolab and Balimela reservoirs in Nabarangpur, Koraput, and Malkangiri districts are likely to receive floodwater. Therefore, the engineers must ensure that the water level of these dams is maintained properly to avoid danger.

Garg urged the officials to take necessary precautions to ward off the possibility of over-flooding in Kalahandi, Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabaragpur, Rayagada, Ganjam, and Gajapati districts.

The Principal Secretary said a 24X7 control room will be opened to monitor the situation and added that experienced engineers have been sent to vulnerable areas.

Worthwhile to mention that the current water level in Upper Indravati, Upper Kolab, and Balimela reservoirs respectively are 64, 35.7, and 65.60 per cent.

The harnessing capacity of these reservoirs is 642,858 and 1516  meters respectively. The review meeting was attended by Special Secretary Archana Patnaik, Er Jyotirmayee Rath, and other senior officials.
