Odisha to Get Six-Lane Capital Region Ring Road; Cabinet Sanctions Rs. 8,307 Crore Project
New Delhi : The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has cleared a mega road infrastructure project for Odisha, the construction of a six-lane, access-controlled Capital Region Ring Road (Bhubaneswar Bypass) spanning 110.875 km. The project, to be executed under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM), carries an estimated cost of ₹8,307.74 crore.
The proposed greenfield highway will integrate with three major National Highways, NH-55, NH-57, NH-655 and State Highway 65, promising seamless connectivity to key economic, logistics and social hubs across Odisha.
According to the Centre, the project is expected to generate nearly 74.43 lakh person-days of direct employment and 93.04 lakh person-days of indirect jobs. It will also boost multi-modal integration by linking 10 economic nodes, four social nodes and five logistics nodes, while ensuring direct access to a major railway station, the Biju Patnaik International Airport, a proposed Multi-Modal Logistics Park (MMLP) and two major ports.
Currently, the Rameshwar-Tangi stretch of NH that passes through Khordha, Bhubaneswar and Cuttack faces chronic congestion due to surging traffic. The new six-lane bypass is expected to ease pressure on these urban centres by diverting heavy commercial vehicles, thereby reducing logistics costs and enhancing freight efficiency.
Officials said the road corridor would not only decongest Odisha’s capital region but also strengthen regional trade by improving connectivity between major economic and religious centres. “The project will accelerate industrial development, improve passenger mobility and unlock new avenues of growth in Odisha and neighbouring eastern states,” the government statement noted.
