Odisha to Develop 38 ‘Model Mandis’ in First Phase of ₹300-Cr Agri-Marketing Upgrade

Bhubaneswar: In a major push to modernise the state’s agricultural marketing network, the Odisha Cabinet on Wednesday approved a ₹300-crore project to develop 38 ‘Model Mandis’ in the first phase. The initiative, proposed by the Cooperation Department, aims to enhance storage, trading and farmer-friendly facilities across the state.

Chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, the Cabinet cleared the proposal, with Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja stating that the first phase will cover 14 large, 17 medium and seven small mandis. Identification for an additional 62 mandis to be upgraded in the second phase is already underway.

The Odisha Bridge and Construction Corporation Ltd (OBCC) will execute the project, which will include modern storage facilities, raised concrete drying platforms, covered sheds, quality-testing kiosks and cooling chambers.

To improve farmer convenience, the Model Mandis will feature rest sheds, clean toilets with separate facilities for women, eateries, vending zones, bank branches, ATMs and parking spaces.

The first-phase works will be carried out during the 2025-26 and 2026-27 financial years.
