Odisha police sniffer dog ‘Storm’ helps to trace out 15 bodies in Wayanad search operation

Berhampur : The search and rescue dog of Odisha police named ‘Storm’ helped in tracing out 15 bodies in Wayanad landslide search operation.

Kerala police has praised and appreciated the work of Odisha police for expertise of Storm in finding out bodies from piles of debris.

This was the first search operation of Storm and he successfully sniffed out 15 bodies buried under debris, said his master Prahallad Nayak.

While modern equipments failed to trace out bodies buried under high piles of debris and stones, sniffer dogs were deployed to help the rescue team. The lone sniffer dog of Odisha police Storm was sent to Wayanad with a team of five personnel of Berhampur police on August 4.

Storm reported in the control room on August 6 and was joined in Naval, Army and NDRF teams. The sniffer dog led the teams to trace out bodies buried under soil piles. Later, JCB was used to dig out the bodies, said team leader sub-inspector (SI) Anuj Taudia.

Notably, Storm is the only canine in the K-9 Squad which can be engaged in carrying out search and rescue operations.

The six-year-old Storm, a German Shepherd, has the expertise to trace dead bodies and survivors from the debris.
