Odisha IPS Officers’ Conference; Oberoi, Executive Director, Interpol. Highlighted the Magnitude & Impact of Cyber Crime Globally

CUTTACK:On the third day of the 62nd Senior Police Officers Conference 2020 on Tuesday, deliberations on several policing subjects were made by Senior Officers of State Police as well as distinguished guest speakers. The highlight of the day was the address by M.M. Oberoi, Executive Director, Interpol. He highlighted the magnitude and impact of Cyber Crime globally and discussed various issues involved in tackling Cyber Crime. He stressed on the importance of actionable intelligence, forensics, capacity building and training, joint cyber crime investigation by teams cutting across district, state and national boundaries, and the role of research and development to effectively counter Cyber crime.
Another important address was on “Technology in Aid of Policing” by Prof A. Karandikar, Director IIT Kanpur. Talking about the rapid and disruptive advancements in the field of communications and the advent of technologies such as 5G and Internet of Things (IoT), he called upon the Senior Police Officers to harness these technologies to meet public safety challenges posed by Terrorism, Left Wing Extremism and Mass Gatherings and Events.
He discussed on how the new age technologies can be applied in Intelligence Gathering, Crime Detection and Law Enforcement.
A focused presentation followed by discussion was also carried out on the topic “Countering Social Media Campaigns” (CSMC),by a Senior Officer of Ministry of Home Affairs, Govt of India. The rapid rise of social media as a tool for mass mobilisation has become a challenge in law & order management. Online radicalization, fake news and rumour generation by influencers and anonymous individuals and groups, are another challenge that can impact internal security. Strategies for countering such campaigns were discussed threadbare.
This apart, deliberations on legal aspects and procedures involving arrest, custody and interrogation of accused persons were also held. Further, matters pertaining to Police Communication, Training, Vigilance, Prisons and Home Guards were also deliberated upon by their respective heads.
