Talcher:The fly ash evacuation efforts of  NTPC Kaniha is set to receive a major boost with the Power station inviting Expression of Interest(EOI) from the end users for lifting of conditioned fly ash from its silos through rail rakes.

The 3010 MW (includes 10 MW Solar) Super Thermal Power Station, the  largest of its  kind in eastern India, has offered to offload about 20 LMT conditioned fly ash  from its six silos of Stage 11 to the bidders. These silos are directly connected to rail heads.

The power station has already despatched fly ash in three BOXON  rakes to M/s Dalmia Cement Bharat. The prospective  end users of fly ash  include cement, asbestos industry,Ash based product manufacturers, traders.  The company is also eying exporters in view of the close proximity of Paradip and Dhamara sea ports of Odissa to NTPC Kaniha.

NTPC Kaniha has installed 14 no silos to collect conditioned fly ash from its units, out of which six silos are connected to rail heads, which could be utilized by prospective bidders to transport  the collected fly ash in rakes to any part of the country. The bidders would be required to coordinate with the railways for rakes, bear the cost of rail freight and tarpaulin covering. Bulk transportation of fly ash is expected to fulfil the requirements of end users to a large extent and at the same time boost the fly ash evacuation from the Power Plant ,thereby reducing  the dependency to stack ash into the Ash ponds that are already hard pressed for space.

Around 80 % of the ash generated in the power plants is fly ash that can find takers among Ash based product manufacturers, cement and asbestos industries, while the rest 20 % bottom ash is an attractive landfill for reclaiming low lying areas, construction industry, elevating, expanding of existing roads  and building of new roads and highways.
