No obscene dance at bars and jatra pandals in Odisha, says Law Minister
Bhubaneswar: Odisha government has banned obscene dance performances in bars and jatra pandals across the state. Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan announced the new regulations, emphasizing the promotion of Odia culture and decency.
The government issued a notification on Tuesday, outlining the new rules under the Odisha Excise (Amendment) Rules, 2024. According to the amended guidelines, bars are now prohibited from hosting any form of vulgar dance. Instead, they may organize orchestra and musical programs, provided they obtain prior written permission from the Excise Commissioner.
Minister Harichandan stated, “Bar dance will not be allowed as it is against Odia culture, and our government will never promote vulgarity. Though bar owners have moved court, we have amended the rules and will inform the court accordingly. Only orchestras will be allowed in the bars”.
The government is also taking steps to address the issue of vulgar dance performances during jatra shows. A meeting with jatra party owners will be held soon to discuss the new regulations. “The government has taken the matter very seriously, and a new rule to prohibit vulgar dance in jatra will come up soon,” Harichandan added.
The new rules mandate that bars must have CCTV cameras installed at appropriate places, including the performance stage. The recorded footage must be made available to the respective police and excise stations to ensure compliance and safety.
Performers are required to wear attire that maintains public decency, and the performance stage must be bounded by a railing three feet high, with a minimum distance of five feet between the railing and the customers.
