THIS UNIVERSITY PROPOSES TO REMOVE RAJIV GANDHI’S NAME FROM ITS CAMPUS (?)

Varanasi: Pinning the fact that no contribution was made by former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in the very existence of the Banaras Hindu University (BHU), the university court has recommended removal of the former’s name from its south campus.

The south campus of BHU was established in 2006 in Mirzapur district. It was named after the former PM-Rajiv Gandhi South Campus Barkachha.

As per the information, a meeting regarding the removal of Rajiv Gandhi’s name from the university’s south campus was held at the BHU court earlier this week under the chairmanship of Chancellor Giridhar Malviya. He later confirmed that the proposal will be made to the university’s academic council as the former minister had no connection with the university.

Malviya also added that  Gandhi never visited BHU and it was former HRD Minister Arjun Singh who named the campus after him.

Meanwhile, this decision of the university’s advisory body has not been taken smoothly by Congress. In reaction, party leader Ajay Rai stated that they would strongly oppose this move of the university and stage a protest, if needed, to stop renaming of the campus.
