Puri: Modernise cremation site “Swargadwara” in Puri developed at a cost of Rs 5 crore released from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, considered as holy, has been dedicated to service.

It now has 28 platforms for cremation, a waiting hall for the relatives of the dead, toilets and drinking water. The registration process would operate through a single window system.

A green belt and a parking lot has been created. This apart, every item required for cremation would be available, including timber logs for burning. While the cremation ground is illuminated, CCTV cameras were installed in the Swargadwara.

As per tradition, the bodies in Swargadwar were burned using firewood. People did not use the electric furnace which had collapsed during cyclone Fani.

As a large number of bodies are being brought by people from across the State for cremation in Swargadwar every day, people have to face difficult situations as the crematorium lacks basic facilities.

Official sources said the entire renovation has been made as per Mahaprasthan model practised in Telangana, according to project engineer of Odisha Bridge Construction Corporation (OBCC), the agency which was entrusted to renovate the cremation site.

By June, an administrative building, a conference hall and pathshradh gruha would be completed, Panigrahi said. Additional District Magistrate Binay Kumar Das and Sub-Collector Bhabataran Sahu were present on the occasion.
