Bhubaneswar,27/04/21:Eminent litterateur Manoj Das passed away while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Puducherry on Tuesday. He was 87. Das was suffering from age-related aliments and was hospitalised for the past few months.

Manoj Das was the foremost bilingual Odia writer and a master of dramatic expression both in English and Odia short stories and novels. He was awarded Padma Shri in 2001 and Padma Bhushan in 2020 for his contribution in the field of literature and education.

Das had been an inmate of Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Puducherry since 1963. He was teaching English literature and Philosophy of Sri Aurobindo at Sri Aurobindo International University.

‘The Escapist’, ‘Tandralokara Prahari’, ‘Aakashra Isara’, ‘Amruta Phala’, ‘A Tiger at Twilight’, ‘Bulldozers and Fables and Fantasies for Adults’, ‘Cyclones’, ‘Godhulira Bagha’, ‘Kanaka-Upatyakara Kahani’ and ‘Sesha Tantrikara Sandhanare’ are some of his highly-appreciated works.

Born in Shankari village of Balasore district on February 27, 1934, Das had started writing early in his career. His first literary work, a book of poetry in Odia; Satavdira Artanada; was published in 1949 when he was in high school.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said the demise of the literary doyen is an irreparable loss to the world of Odia and English literature.
