Lower pressure over Bay of Bengal in 24 hours, extreme heavy rain from today

Bhubaneswar: Amid the forecast for heavy rainfall till June 27, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday informed about likely formation of a Low Pressure Area over Northwest Bay of Bengal, adjoining North Odisha-West Bengal coasts.

Under the influence of anticipated low pressure system, squally weather with gusty surface wind speed reaching 45 to 55 kmph very likely over North Bay of Bengal adjoining West Central Bay of Bengal , along and off Odisha coast from June 25 to June 27 morning. Fishermen have been advised to not to venture into sea area of along and off Odisha coast, North Bay of Bengal adjoining West Central Bay of Bengal during this period, the IMD said in its midday bulletin.

Meanwhile, heavy to very heavy rain (7 to 20cm) is likely to occur at one or two places in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Dhenkanal and Cuttack districts till 8.30 am on Sunday. Heavy rain (7 to 11cm) may also occur in Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Angul, Deogarh, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Boudh, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Nawarangpur, Koraput and Malkangiri during this period.

It has warned of temporary waterlogging in low-lying areas, poor visibility during intense spell of rain and traffic congestion in urban areas and possibility of wall collapsed of vulnerable kutchha houses. “Traffic advisory may be seen for movement in your destination. Arrangement for drainage of excess water from nursery bed, preparations for sowing of paddy crops, seed collections may be done,” it said, adding that mining activity may be judiciously regulated during heavy rain.
