Bhubaneswar: The iconic Kalinga Studio in Bhubaneswar, once the heart of Odisha’s film industry, is set to be operational again by January next year after undergoing a major transformation.

A seven-member committee of the Odisha Assembly on Thursday inspected the redevelopment work at the studio. Committee chairman and MLA Dusmanta Kumar Swain said the government has set a target to complete the project within the timeline.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi had earlier reviewed the progress during a visit on June 1, where he praised the upgraded infrastructure and directed officials to prepare a detailed project report to transform Kalinga Studio into a world-class facility.Built in 1980, Kalinga Studio was once a landmark of Odia cinema, hosting the shoots of several hit films through the 1980s and 1990s. However, it suffered massive damage in the 1999 super cyclone and gradually lost prominence due to outdated equipment.

The ongoing redevelopment includes an entrance plaza, indoor shooting complex, Kalinga movie magic zone, village area landmark structures, snow world, community hall, bamboo creations, waterbody and landscaped green areas.

The government hopes the revamp will restore the studio’s past glory while positioning it as a modern hub for filmmakers.
