Justice Yashwant Varma Denies Recovery of Burnt Cash from His Residence, Questions Video Evidence

New Delhi: Justice Yashwant Varma of the Delhi High Court has strongly denied reports that burnt cash was recovered from his residence following a fire incident in his storeroom last week. His response comes after the Supreme Court released videos and photos allegedly showing charred currency notes retrieved from his premises.

In a reply to Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna via the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, Justice Varma stated, “Assuming without admitting that the video was taken at the site immediately after the incident, none of it appears to have been recovered or seized.”

Justice Varma, who was not present at his residence on the night of the March 14 incident, cited accounts from his daughter and staff, claiming that no sacks of burnt cash were shown or taken away by authorities after the fire was extinguished.

“What baffles me is the complete absence of any sacks of allegedly burnt currency being recovered or seized. Neither my daughter, personal secretary, nor household staff were shown these so-called sacks of burnt notes,” he asserted in his response.

The video, depicting a bagful of charred currency, was shared by the Delhi Police Commissioner with the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. However, Justice Varma refuted the claim, saying the only material removed was “debris and what they considered salvageable.”

Dismissing allegations that cash was stored in the storeroom by him or his family, he termed the notion “totally preposterous.”
