IPS, Satyajit Mohanty Takes Charge as OPSC Chairman

Bhubaneswar: Retired IPS officer Satyajit Mohanty assumed charge as the new chairman of the Odisha Public Service Commission (OPSC) on Monday.

Mohanty was serving as the Director General of Fire Services, Odisha prior to his voluntary retirement from the service. The IPS officer of 1988 batch was given a farewell by Odisha Fire Service in Cuttack on Sunday.

He will hold the post of OPSC chairman till he attains the age of 62, said a notification of the General Administration and Public Grievance Department.

“Conducting regular examinations under UPSC will be our priority. With the help of top and experienced bureaucrats and educationists in the board, we will try our best to conduct all the examinations in a transparent manner,” said Mohanty.

In a career spanning for a period of 33 years, Mohanty had earlier served in many important positions in the State police administration. He worked as superintendent of police (SP) of Koraput, Rourkela, Cuttack and Balasore districts. Besides, Mohanty had served as the Additional SP of Puri.

In July 2018, Mohanty was appointed as the new commissioner of Cuttack-Bhubaneswar Police Commissionerate and later Director of Intelligence before assuming the office of the DG of fire services.

 He is a recipient of Police (Antrik Suraksha Seva) Medal, Police Medal for Meritorious Service and President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service.

Mohanty is known for innovative leadership and institutional reforms in his long professional career.

He also served as SP, Vigilance, and Additional Transport Commissioner, Odisha. On promotion to DIGP, he was posted as DIGP, Northern Range, Sambalpur, Central Range, Cuttack and Western Range, Rourkela.

On promotion to IGP, he was posted as IGP, Western Range, Rourkela, Fire Service & Home Guards and IGP (Finance), Odisha. Mohanty during his service career has received many commendations and rewards. Notable among them is the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2004.

He served as the Police Commissioner of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack and was also the Director General of Police (in-charge) for a brief period during November and December 2019. An avid sportsperson, Mohanty is fond of cycling and tennis.

Mohanty was accorded the guard of honour and Additional DGP, Fire Service Soumya Mishra, IG, Asheet Kumar Panigrahi, and senior officials bid farewell to the Director-General on the occasion.
