Hardcore Maoist surrenders before Kalahandi SP

Bhawanipatna: A hardcore Maoist Lalsu of Kalahandi Area Committee of CPI(Maoist) surrendered on Sunday in the presence DIG of Police, South Western Range, Koraput, Rajesh Pandit, Kalahandi SP Saravana Vivek M and CRPF Commandant Biplab Sarkar.
Lalsu had joined the banned CPI(Maoist) organisation in 2009. After being a member of Ganglor Dalam of CPI(Maoist) in Chhattisgarh for about one year, he came to Niyamgiri in Odisha in 2011. Since then, he had been operating as an insurgent in Odisha.
Lalsu began working in Karlapat in 2014 as a member of the Area Committee and was later promoted to Area Committee Secretary. He was involved in several exchanges of fire with Kalahandi police at Manaska in 2016, Barangpadar in 2017, Kotalghati in 2019 and Sohespadar in 2020.
Police sources said Lalsu decided to surrender in response to appeals made by Odisha Government to leave the path of violence and join the mainstream by making use of the Surrender and Rehabilitation policy. He said he was disillusioned with Maoist ideology because of the ill-treatment to lower rank and women cadres and also injustice meted out to tribal people.
