Govt Launches Online Portal for Citizenship Applications Under CAA
New Delhi: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Tuesday launched a new online portal for individuals eligible to apply for Indian citizenship under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) 2019. This comes after the government on Monday notified the rules for implementing the CAA.
“The Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2024 under the CAA-2019 have been notified. A new portal has been launched, persons eligible under CAA-2019 can apply for citizenship on this portal indiancitizenshiponline.nic.in,” the spokesperson said.
The MHA also announced the launch of a mobile app, “CAA-2019,” to further streamline the application process for mobile phone users.
The implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, by the Centre comes four years after its passage by Parliament. This law aims to expedite citizenship for undocumented non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan who arrived in India before December 31, 2014.
With the formalized rules in place, the Modi government can now begin granting Indian citizenship to these persecuted individuals. The CAA and its newly established application channels are now in effect.
