I am deeply saddened as my close Ravenshawavian friend former Jagatsinghpur MP Trilochan Kanungo passed away while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar, today ( Friday,April 21, 2023 at around 7 a.m.. He was 82.

The veteran leader was admitted to the healthcare facility on March 30 due to illness brain stroke followed by old age related complications. However, he breathed his last, this morning, family sources said.

Kanungo was elected to the Lok Sabha from Jagatsinghpur Parliamentary Constituency in 1999. He had successfully contested the polls as a BJD candidate. He was also elected to the Odisha Legislative Assembly thrice.

Trilochan had done his post-graduation in Mathematics. He was very much active in Student politics and was elected as President of Ravenshaw College Students Union. During 1964 student strike which forced the then Home Minister Guljarilala Nanda to come down to Cuttack to bring an end to the student’s unrest.

He was married to Agasti Mohanty who was our class mate and was leading a very happy life. Trilochan was a very good organiser and had established Adaspur College which virtually functioned as an autonomous University.

He was spending most if his time for the development of the college. He told me that the main source of income of the college was from plantations which added to maintaining a healthy environment and very good income for running the autonomous educational institution.

While he was the Chairman of Cuttack Municipality, he had established a very good library in the silver city which is a monumental work. No other politicians of the State had ever thought of establishing a public library for the people of the city.

Only about a month ago I had talked with him over phone and had invited him to my house for lunch.

He had gladly agreed and told me that he would shortly visit Bhubaneswar and meet the old College friends as well as political friends. But before this proposed meeting Trilochan left for his heavenly abode leaving most of his dreams unfulfilled.

I pray lord Jagannath to bless him and put his immortal noble soul under His lotus feet and give enough strength to his nearer and dearer persons to bear the great loss with heavy heart.

Born on November 24, 1940 at Badamulei village in Cuttack district, Kanungo was residing in Sheikh Bazaar area of Cuttack city for the last few years.

Trilochan will be remembered for ever by the citizens of Cuttack and the State for his contributions for education and welfare
