FLOOD-LIKE SITUATION IN ODISHA HAS IMPROVED CONSIDERABLY

BHUBANESWAR:Odisha Special Relief Commissioner (SRC), Pradeep Jena has said that the flood situation in Odisha has improved considerably on Sunday. He said the water receded from vast areas of the State and the situation is likely to get better tomorrow.

Jena said the inflow of floodwater from Chhattisgarh into the Hirakud dam is decreasing. Discharge near Munduli may remain within 10 lakh cusec and peak will continue today. From tomorrow morning, the situation will improve. After  8 to 10 hours the water level will recede in Kendrapara and Puri.

Odisha SRC said Subarnarekha, Baitarani, Brahmani, Budhabalanga rivers are no more in spate and the water level has come down drastically by this morning.

A total of 112 blocks, 896 gram panchayats, 3256 villages, 21 urban local bodies and 75 wards have been hit by the flood like situation, he said, adding that a total of 14,32,701 people have been affected.

The worst affected Jajpur district has also seen a positive improvement in the flood situation by now, Jena said and added that out of 32 breaches in different river basins, 24 are in Jajpur district alone.

Seventeen senior officials were deployed for relief management. In Bhadrak too, the water levels have been receding and flood alert removed, he added.

Jena said: “Kendrapada’s Dhoiya, Ali, Rajkanika in the Brahmani river basin witnessed heavy water-logging like every year. Everything is under control here on Sunday. The water level in Kanasa and Delanda areas of Puri was receding.”

The Special Relief Commissioner praised the officials for their efforts for providing help and cooperation during the flood-like situation. He said major land erosions were averted by the efforts of officials from the Water Resources department.

The Odisha SRC said district officials along with officers on special duty were conducting regular night patrolling and embankment patrolling. Seven additional Fire Service teams and special ODRAF team were deployed to handle the rescue and relief operations in Mahanadi basin.

Water Resources Department’s Principal Secretary Anu Garg said Subarnarekha, Budhabalanga, Baitarani, Brahmani rivers are stable now and flowing below the danger level. Garg said three sluice gates of Rengali dam were closed and the 4th will be closed soon.
