Fake Doctor Arrested After Botched Delivery Claims Lives of Mother and Newborn In Ganjam
Berhampur: In a chilling case of medical negligence, a nursing home proprietor in Odisha’s Ganjam district has been arrested for allegedly conducting a delivery without any medical qualifications, resulting in the death of a young mother and her newborn.
Mangulu Charan Pradhan, 35, of Dengausta, was taken into custody on Sunday following a complaint by Babu Nayak, husband of the deceased Roji Nayak. Police revealed that Pradhan, along with two Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs), carried out the delivery on May 11 without a registered medical practitioner present.
Despite assurances of proper facilities, Roji was admitted to the nursing home while in labour. After four hours, the unqualified team conducted the delivery. The newborn was declared dead shortly after birth, and Roji died en route to MKCG Medical College and Hospital.
The ANMs, Madhusmita Pattanayak and Pramodini Gamango, were arrested earlier for their roles in the tragedy. Authorities are now investigating how the facility operated without oversight, raising serious questions about rural healthcare regulation.
