Eknath Shinde resigns as Maharashtra CM, to continue as Caretaker amid political uncertainty

MUMBAI : Eknath Shinde resigned as Chief Minister of Maharashtra on Tuesday, following the Mahayuti’s historic win in the Maharashtra Assembly Elections. The term of the current assembly concluded today, November 26.Shinde will act as the caretaker CM for the new Mahayuti-led government.

Shinde submitted his resignation to Governor Radhakrishnan at Raj Bhavan in Mumbai, accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar.

The anticipation over who will become the next chief minister continues. Will BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis take over, or will Eknath Shinde retain the position?

Numerous BJP leaders have shown support for Fadnavis due to the party’s exceptional performance. Meanwhile, supporters of Shinde have gathered at his official residence, ‘Varsha,’ advocating for his continued leadership. The declaration of Maharashtra’s next chief minister has been postponed following the Mahayuti’s decisive victory in the assembly elections.Janata Party (BJP) won 132 constituencies, the most among the Mahayuti members. Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar’s NCP also fared well, with Sena winning 57 and NCP 41 seats.

The Congress-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) faced a defeat, with the party recording one of its poorest performances in the state assembly elections, securing only 16 seats. Sharad Pawar’s NCP(SCP) managed to win just 10 seats, while Uddhav Thackeray’s (UBT) secured 20 seats.

The BJP, leading the Mahayuti’s resurgence by winning a record 132 of its 235 contested seats, has remained silent. However, the party is reportedly facing pressure from its MLAs, who are advocating for the chief minister to be from their ranks. Many MLAs have reportedly proposed Devendra Fadnavis’s name for the role.
