EDITORS GUILD OF INDIA CONDEMNS ARREST OF REPUBLIC TV EIC ARNAB GOSWAMI ASKS FOR FAIR TREATMENT

MUMBAI:The Editors Guild of India on Wednesday expressed dismay and concern over the action taken by the Mumbai Police against Republic TV Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami. The Guild has also expressed its shock over the “sudden arrest”.
In its statement, the Editors Guild of India expressed its shock over the sudden action of Mumbai Police in the early hours on Wednesday.
The Guild also called upon the Maharashtra Chief Minister to ensure that Goswami is treated fairly and State power is not used against critical reporting by the media. A team of Alibaug Police had picked up Goswami from his residence in Mumbai on Wednesday morning and put the Republic TV Editor-in-Chief under arrest for allegedly abetting the suicide of a 53-year-old interior designer which took place in 2018.
Goswami, who was seen being pushed into the police van, said he had been assaulted by the police at his home while being whisked away forcibly.
Meanwhile, the several top leaders of various political parties have strongly condemned the assault on Republic TV editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami and the subsequent arrest, and have cited the behaviour of the Maharashtra government and police as an attack on the freedom of Press, the fourth pillar of democracy.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah,Rajnath Singh,Jitendra Singh,PMO Office, Union Minister Prakash Javdekar,Dharmendra Pradhan,Smt Nirmala Sitaraman, and Mrs.Smurti Irani pointed out that this incident has reminded the country of the days during the Emergency.
