Bureau,Odishabarta

Bhubaneswar: A youth was brutally murdered in broad daylight on a busy road near CRPF Square here on Saturday. Police detained two persons in connection with the ghastly incident. The victim has been identified as Tukuna Das alias Jatia (26), a slum dweller at Salia Sahi. The accused duo are Sudhir Prusty (28) and his brother Sagar Prusty (32), belonging to the same slum.

Sources said the locals spotted two persons brutally assaulting the youth inside a pickup van. When the attackers tried to flee the spot leaving the victim in a pool of blood inside the vehicle, the locals caught hold of the duo and beat them up. A PCR van reached the spot and rescued the duo from the clutches of the angry locals. While the police were taking the attackers in the PCR van, the locals dragged the duo from the vehicle. The infuriated locals assaulted the duo again. The attackers were rescued after the arrival of additional police forces. They were then taken to Capital Hospital for primary treatment.

Police Commissioner Sudhanshu Sarangi said the murder was a result of counter-attack by the brothers. Sarangi said the accused duo committed the crime at the spur of the moment after Tukuna attacked Sagar. Tukuna was an accused in multiple cases. The deceased was out on bail recently with two criminal cases pending against him, Sarangi added.

The Police Commissioner said Tukuna had a brawl with Sudhir and Sagar. The duo tried to take him to the police station in the vehicle. On the way, Tukuna attacked Sagar with a knife. The brothers retaliated by stabbing Tukuna multiple times with the same knife.

On getting information, the PCR van reached the spot and rescued Tukuna before shifting him to the hospital. Later, he succumbed to injuries, the Police Commissioner said.

Earlier, in October 2020, a sweet stall owner was hacked to death in Samantarapur area of Bhubaneswar over business rivalry. The victim was chased before he was brutally assaulted with sharp weapons by a group of miscreants. The entire incident was captured on CCTV cameras installed near the spot.
