Drug Peddlers have a free run in Kodola in Ganjam

Ganjam: Contraband and illicit liquor trade seems to be unbothered by the corona virus crisis as there has been a spurt in such cases across the district.

Unscrupulous traders have started selling liquor, brown sugar and ganja taking advantage of the situation of Corona Covid. Foreign liquor retailers are selling through back-door in many areas of the district.

Sources said in Beguniapada Block several pan shops,tiffin hotel  vendors and petty businessmen are also selling liquor (Country made and FL) at black charging thrice the original price. Since there is no restriction on trade of essential items, vendors are clandestinely selling illegal liquor, and ganja in other rural areas causing strong resentment among the locals. Two days back in a joint operation the Excise Official and Police were seized contraband Ganja while it transported in a bricks loaded tractor in Kodola police limit. Mafias’ were peddling ganja.

Tightening noose around the neck of Ganja mafias Police seized 240 kgs of ganja cost above 10 lakhs in between Kodola – Khalikote road on Monday and arrested the driver while the peddler flee from spot taking the advantage the information in advance, public said.

Acting on a tip-off, the raid team led by IIC Kodola, Debasis Mohanty and OIC,Beguniapada  SI Arati Parida,ASI Sarat Chandra Mohapatra seized the pick-up van.

Speaking to Scribe, IIC, Kodola, Debasisih Mohanty said, huge quantity of contraband ganja seized – 237.250 kgs on Sunday at 2.00 p.m. while the informant officer,Arati Kumari Parida of Kodala PS along with staff were conducting mask and MV enforcement at Bhatapada Chowk, the accused Jayaram Nahak was found transporting the contraband gania weighing 237.250 kgs containing in 7 nos of jerry bag in a red colour auto-ricshaw.By taking opportunity of Covid-19 shut down period. The place of procurement and destination is still under investigation
