ODISHABARTA

Berhampur dated 18thJuly 2021:Research Society for Study of Diabetes in India (RSSDI) has initiated an ambitious drive Defeat Diabetes Campaign (DDC) to increase awareness about Diabetes among general public. In this initiative, 10000 doctors from across India will be participating as ambassadors of health. Dr Sunil Kumar Kota, Consultant Endocrinologist from Diabetes & Endocare Clinic, Berhampur is spearheading the campaign from Odisha. Dr Kota has formed a group of 256 doctors from all the districts of Odisha. As a part of this awareness drive, today Dr Surjya Narayan Patro, Hon’ble Speaker, Odisha Legislative Assembly joined Dr Kota for a live discussion on Facebook to share his perspective on Diabetes.

Dr Patro advised younger generation on the importance of prevention of lifestyle disorders including Diabetes, Obesity, Hypertension, Lipid and heart problems. Since these disorders occur at least a decade earlier in Indians compared to westerners, early adoption of healthy lifestyle and daily exercise is the key. He said, since diabetes is a silent killer and a slow poison, don’t wait for typical symptoms to get diagnosed. Instead  everyone above the age 40 years should undergo at least annual blood sugar, blood pressure and lipid measurement to catch these disorders early followed by timely lifestyle modification and treatment if needed. Especially the ones who are obese, physically sedentary, having Blood pressure and cholesterol problems, Ladies having PCOD (Irregular meses with male pattern hair growth), past history of Diabetes during pregnancy and those having family history of Diabetes are more prone for development of Diabetes. Citing his own experience, Dr Patro said along with diet, exercise, medication intake as per doctor’s advice, timely screening of organs including those of Heart, Kidney, Nerves, Eyes, Liver, Feet and blood vessels can delay the onset of these diabetes related disabling complications. He happily shared the support he received from his wife and family during his battle against Diabetes lasting over 4 decades. At the end, Dr Sunil Kota highlighted the importance of proper sugar control during COVID-19 times to have a complication free recovery and better long term post covid outcomes.

Dr Patro congratulated Dr Sunil Kota for taking the lead in this noble awareness drive on Diabetes. He further wished that, this Defeat Diabetes drive by RSSDI would enlighten everyone about the lurking danger of Diabetes leading to timely adoption of healthy lifestyle.
