Death Toll in Ganjam Hooch Tragedy Rises to 5 as Another Villager Succumbs
Berhampur: The death toll in the Chikiti hooch tragedy has climbed to five after another critically ill villager breathed his last at MKCG Hospital today.
The latest victim has been identified as Pradeep Behera from Jenapur village. Behera was receiving treatment in the hospital’s ICU when he passed away.
Just yesterday, another victim, Baya Sethi from Karabalua village, also died at MKCG Hospital while undergoing treatment. Earlier, three other villagers had lost their lives after consuming spurious liquor.
On August 16, over 15 residents from Karabalua and Jenapur villages fell ill after consuming country liquor purchased near Moundpur. The affected individuals initially experienced stomach pain and vomiting and were admitted to Chikiti Hospital. As their condition worsened, they were transferred to MKCG Hospital.
In response to the tragedy, the Excise Superintendent of Berhampur has been relieved of duties. The police have already arrested at least eight people in connection with the incident.
