Children die of unknown disease in Kashipur: three children died & four were hospitalized within a week

Rayagada (Badal Tah):  Disease has spread in Kashipur block at the onset of rainy season. Three children died due to unknown disease & four children have been admitted to the district headquarters hospital in critical condition. This has increased the concern of people. The dead children are Dashi Majhi (12), Narendra Majhi (6) and Poorni Majhi (9). The seriously affected children are Shalfi Majhi (8), Mahendra Majhi (5), Plasi Majhi (12) and Jayaram Majhi (5).

An unknown disease started spreading in Munushpadar village of Kashipur Block since last weel. Only children were affected. After the disease spread, the villagers did not know about it at first. As a result, the disease spread from child to child. Poorni died on 6th while Dashi died on 8th and Narendra on 9th. Since 10th, 4 other children got infected, who were taken to Kashipur CHC. After preliminary treatment there, they were shifted to the district headquarters hospital(DHH) at Rayagada.

All of the infected children are undergoing treatment after being admitted to the DHH. Chief District Medical & Public Health Officer(CDM&PHO) Dr. Lalmohan Routray and Additional  CDM&PHO Dr. Bardakant Mishra attended the patients and assessed the condition of the affected children. After investigation, they came to know that some infections in the throat caused such diseases to spread. Samples were collected and tested, Microbiologist Dr. Suryakant Samal informed.

However, instead of bringing the affected children for medical treatment, the villagers and parents worshipped and clung on to traditional healing methods. This took lives of innocent children. On the other hand, the health department, in spite of a wide HR network, had no information even after the disease was prevalent since last ten days. It seems, the health deptt was not very serious and sensitive to this incident, opined the local netizens.
