Cuttack,( 27/01/26):The Indian film industry has lost an extremely reliable and fearless technical artist. Senior Odia sound engineer and recordist Er. Sameer Kumar Patra, who left a distinct imprint on the sound design of many acclaimed Hindi films over more than two decades, has passed away.

Known for his precision, technical depth, and humility, Sameer was among the few Odia professionals who built a lasting and respected identity in Bollywood’s sound department. Although he stayed away from publicity, his contribution to storytelling—both in mainstream and independent cinema—was truly invaluable.

Sameer Kumar Patra was born on December 8, 1976, in Bhanjanagar of Ganjam district, Odisha. After completing his school education locally, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Science from Bhanjanagar College. Driven by his technical aptitude and passion for cinema, he pursued a diploma in Sound and Television Engineering at the Biju Pattanaik Film & Television Institute of Odisha (BPFTIO), Cuttack, from 1996 to 2000. He belonged to the first batch of the Sound Department of the institute.
Soon after completing his education, he moved to Mumbai and began his career in the Hindi film industry. Between 2000 and 2026, he worked on more than 75 films, television series, and digital projects. Starting as an assistant, he gradually established himself as a senior sound engineer.
According to IMDb, he served in various key roles such as sound mixer, additional sound mixer, location sound recordist, and sound engineer.
Some of his notable films include:
Chak De! India
Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year
Fukrey, Veere Di Wedding, Gold
Drishyam 2, Mimi, Jug Jugg Jeeyo
Filmistaan, Sadak 2
OTT series:
Criminal Justice
Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhen
His work in Kalira Atita with National Award-winning director Nila Madhab Panda showcased his exceptional ability to express social issues and emotional depth through sound. The Hindi film Dhurandhar, released earlier this year, was his final project.
Colleagues and juniors remember Sameer as a soft-spoken, kind-hearted, and deeply dedicated professional. Despite working on many major projects, he remained extremely simple and acted like a mentor to young technicians.
With his passing, a deep sense of grief has enveloped the BPFTIO family, the Odia film fraternity, and the technical community of Indian cinema. Er. Sameer Kumar Patra is survived by his family.
His sounds may fade into silence, but his legacy will echo forever.
