Nabarangapur,(Raighar): BJP MP Roopa Ganguly has said the Citizenship Law was passed as ordained by the constitution, but a few parties are misleading people on the matter.

Addressing BJP’s Jan Jagran Abhiyan here in the mini stadium in Nabarangpur district on Tuesday, Ganguly said the CAA is meant for providing citizenship to the people who have been facing religious persecution in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

The BJP leader who has come to the state for a two-day visit in connection with the Jan Jagran Abhiyan made it clear that the CAA will never deprive any Indian of their rights as citizen of the country.

Ganguly said the Congress and other regional parties have been making a hue and cry that the citizenship of Muslims will be forfeited with the Act. She appealed to the people not to be carried out by the rumours and added that the vested interest political outfits are trying to misled the people and particularly those belonging to the minorities.

The BJP MP said Pakistan has been torturing Hindus, Buddhist, Christians, Jains, Sikhs and Parsis on the grounds of religion for the past 70 years. This law will enable them to get Indian citizenship and live with dignity, she added.

BJP sources said Ganguly fly in a chopper to Raighar block of Nabarangpur in where she address a public meeting of over 5000 people, mostly Bengali refugees in the Raighar mini stadium. Ganguly’s visit is part of BJP’s strategy to garner nationwide support for the CAA that has triggered massive protest all over the country with governments of at last three non BJP-ruled states passing resolutions against it. Last week, party general secretary Ram Madhav had come to Bhubaneswar to speak at a meet of intellectuals.

“Roopa Ganguly had visited Nabarangpur during the polls and enjoys quite a lot of popularity among the Bengali refugees here due to her role in Mahabharat as Draupadi. She is also a firebrand speaker. Her speech in support of CAA and NRC would appeal to all the Bengali families here,” said Nityananda Gond, BJP’s tribal MLA from Umerkote.

In the 60s, thousands of Bengali refugees settled in Raighar, Umerkote and Jharigaon blocks of Nabarangpur district, then part of the erstwhile Dandakaranya reserve forest, and were provided with 0.4 acres of homestead land and seven acres of agricultural land each. These Hindu Bangladeshis (mostly Scheduled Castes from Bangladesh) were rehabilitated in 65 villages as refugees under the Dandakaranya project.

After the CAA came into force early this month, there is much jubilation over the new act. “We had voted for BJP in the Assembly election this year after Union Home Minister Amit Shah had promised at an election rally about bringing the Citizenship Amendment Act. We are feeling very happy that the Modi government has kept its promise. Now we have no apprehensions about our citizenship,” said Sibnath Banerjee, former president of Nabarangour zilla parishad.

The Jan Jagaran Abhiyan was attended by district BJP President Jagadish Bisoi, former MP Balabhadra Majhi, Parshuram Majhi,Santosh Mohapatra, Block Chairman Bina Gonda, Pritisnigdha Mohapatra, Mayaram  Gonda, Shyam Lal Kalar, Sarat Jena, Shiba Gonda, Sudarshan Majhi and others.
