BJP’s Sujeet Kumar Set to Win Rajya Sabha Seat from Odisha Unopposed
Bhubaneswar: BJP candidate Sujeet Kumar is set to secure an unopposed victory in the upcoming Rajya Sabha bypoll from Odisha, scheduled for December 20. With no other nominations filed by the deadline, Kumar’s election is now a mere formality, awaiting official confirmation.
Kumar submitted his nomination papers on December 9 at the Odisha Legislative Assembly in the presence of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and BJP Odisha President Manmohan Samal.
A former Rajya Sabha MP from the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), Kumar resigned on September 6, prompting his expulsion from the party for alleged “anti-party activities.” His previous tenure was set to end in April 2026. After his exit, Kumar joined the BJP in Delhi, accompanied by senior leaders including Odisha in-charge Vijaypal Singh Tomar, Dharmendra Pradhan, Bhartruhari Mahtab and Arun Singh.
The bypoll to fill the vacant Rajya Sabha seat follows the Election Commission of India’s schedule. Voting is planned from 9 am to 4 pm on December 20, with counting at 5 pm the same day.
