Bhubaneswar Traffic Constable Murdered by Police Clerk Over Insurance Money
Bhubaneswar: A 12-day-long search for a missing Bhubaneswar traffic constable has ended in tragedy. Police have confirmed that Shubhamitra Sahoo, who disappeared on September 6, was murdered by her lover, a police clerk named Deepak Rout. Rout has reportedly confessed to the crime.
According to police, Rout, who worked at the Twin City Police Commissioner’s Office, allegedly strangled Shubhamitra to death near Raj Bhawan Square. After the murder, he enlisted an accomplice to help him transport and bury her body in a remote forest area in Keonjhar. Rout admitted to killing her during interrogation, stating he throttled her after a dispute.
Investigators believe the motive behind the murder was financial. Rout allegedly wanted to claim a life insurance policy he had taken out in Shubhamitra’s name after their court marriage. He was also reportedly trying to recover around Rs 20 lakh he had given her before their marriage. The gruesome discovery was made after a woman’s body was found in Keonjhar. Police, acting on a complaint from Shubhamitra’s father, who had named Rout as a suspect, began questioning him. Following his confession, police have seized the car used in the crime and sent a team to Keonjhar to recover the body.
The case has taken a new turn as police are now investigating the death of Rout’s first wife, who allegedly died in a road accident. It is suspected that her death might also have been a case of foul play, as Rout reportedly received Rs 1 crore insurance claim from her death as well.
