Bhubaneswar/Noida: Civil society groups in Odisha, New Delhi and Uttar Pradesh have condemned the Hathras gang rape incident and have sought immediate action against the culprit to give justice to the Dalit rape victim.

A 19-year-old Dalit rape victim, Manisha Valmiki, who was gang-raped and left paralyzed by four upper-caste men, died a fortnight after the attack in a Delhi hospital on Tuesday.

Manisha, on 14th September, was dragged by the dupatta around her neck to a field when she had gone to collect cattle fodder, which caused her spinal cord injury. A week after she was hospitalized, the girl told the police that she had been raped by four men whom she also named.

Civil society organizations Mahila Shramajeebee Mancha, Odisha, Atmashakti Trust, Sonbhadra Vikash Sangathan, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha Shramajeebee Mancha and more than 20 other organizations have demanded stringent action against those culprits involved in Manisha’s rape case.

“What is the solution to this crime against women in our country where their safety is at stake? It is indeed a sad and shameful day for our country. We failed our daughters as a nation”, the CSO members said in the press release.
