Dussehra: The Courage to Conquer the Evil Within
By Dr Satyajit Naik , IPS

Dussehra is not merely a festival marked by colourful celebrations, traditional rituals and the burning of Ravana’s effigy. It is a powerful reminder that every human being has the ability to choose between right and wrong, courage and fear, compassion and cruelty.
The festival invites us to look beyond external celebrations and examine the values that guide our daily lives. Its deepest message is that the victory of goodness must begin within the human heart before it can transform the world around us.
The story of Lord Rama’s victory over Ravana has continued to inspire generations because it speaks to challenges that remain relevant in every age. Ravana possessed immense knowledge, extraordinary abilities and great power, yet his arrogance and disregard for righteousness led to his downfall. Lord Rama, in contrast, demonstrated patience, self-restraint, commitment to duty and respect for moral principles.
This contrast teaches us that achievement alone does not make a person great. True greatness lies in the responsible use of knowledge, authority and strength for the welfare of others.
In our everyday lives, the battle between good and evil often takes place in quiet and ordinary moments. It appears when we decide whether to speak the truth despite personal difficulties, whether to help someone in distress without expecting a reward, and whether to stand against injustice when remaining silent seems easier. Dishonesty, intolerance, greed, prejudice and indifference may appear small at first, but they can gradually weaken the moral foundation of families and communities.
Dussehra encourages us to recognise these tendencies and replace them with honesty, empathy, humility and courage.
The festival also carries the inspiring legacy of Maa Durga’s victory over Mahishasura. Her strength represents the determination to confront injustice and protect those who cannot defend themselves. Her divine image reminds us that courage must be guided by compassion and that power acquires its true meaning when it is used to safeguard others.
This message is particularly important in building a society where women live without fear, children grow in safe surroundings and every individual receives dignity and equal treatment. Respect for women, protection of children and care for vulnerable people must be demonstrated through everyday conduct rather than confined to ceremonial expressions
For me, as a police officer, the spirit of Dussehra also has a special connection with duty, discipline and public service.
The responsibility of maintaining peace is not limited to responding to offences after they occur. It also involves preventing crime, creating awareness, listening to citizens and strengthening public confidence in the law. Every act of service performed with honesty, every injustice addressed with fairness and every effort made to protect a vulnerable person reflects the victory of righteousness in practical life. The uniform carries authority, but that authority must always be accompanied by accountability, sensitivity and respect for human dignity.
A peaceful society cannot be created by law-enforcement agencies alone. Citizens, families, educational institutions, community organisations and public representatives all have an important role in nurturing a culture of responsibility. When people reject violence, refuse to participate in unlawful activities and extend cooperation to the authorities, they become active partners in maintaining public safety. Similarly, when young people choose knowledge over prejudice, constructive dialogue over hostility and responsible digital behaviour over the spread of rumours, they help protect the social fabric of the nation.
In the present digital age, the message of Dussehra has acquired another important dimension. Information travels rapidly, and a careless message or unverified allegation can create fear, damage reputations and disturb public peace. Every citizen should exercise discretion before sharing information online. We must learn to distinguish facts from speculation and disagreement from hatred. Freedom of expression becomes more meaningful when it is accompanied by responsibility, sensitivity and respect for the rights of others. The ability to control our words and actions is itself a form of victory over the negative impulses within us.
Festivals also test our collective commitment to discipline and mutual respect. As communities come together to celebrate Vijayadashami, enthusiasm should be balanced with concern for public safety. Respecting traffic rules, avoiding intoxicated driving, preventing dangerous behaviour and cooperating with the administration can ensure that celebrations remain joyful for everyone.
No celebration is complete if it places another person’s life or security at risk. True festive spirit is reflected in the happiness we create, the difficulties we prevent and the consideration we show to fellow citizens.
Dussehra further reminds us that goodness is not measured only by grand gestures. It is visible in the honesty of a public servant, the dedication of a teacher, the compassion of a doctor, the sincerity of a worker and the courage of an ordinary citizen who refuses to tolerate wrongdoing. A small act of kindness may restore someone’s hope, while a single responsible decision may prevent a serious harm. These everyday victories deserve recognition because they gradually create a more humane and trustworthy society.
On this Vijayadashami, let us make a personal commitment to become better human beings and more responsible citizens. Let us overcome ego with humility, anger with patience, prejudice with understanding and selfishness with service. Let us ensure that our words encourage harmony, our actions uphold justice and our decisions reflect integrity. The burning of Ravana’s effigy should serve as a reminder of the work that remains to be done within ourselves.
The real significance of Dussehra lies in carrying its message into the days that follow. When truth guides our choices, compassion shapes our relationships and duty directs our actions, the ideals celebrated during the festival become a living force in society. May this Dussehra inspire every individual to become a guardian of goodness, a defender of justice and a messenger of peace. The greatest victory is not the defeat of an enemy outside us, but the transformation of the person within us.
