Golanthara Police Arrest Husband in Dowry Death Case; Woman Dies During Treatment

Brahmapur, Oct 2: Golanthara Police have arrested a 36-year-old man in connection with the death of his wife, who allegedly succumbed to injuries sustained after a domestic assault. Police have registered a case invoking provisions relating to cruelty, dowry death and culpable homicide, along with the Dowry Prohibition Act.

The accused has been identified as Manas Ranjan Dakhinakabat (36), son of Golak Bihari Dakhinakabat of Bankoi under Bolagada Police Station in Khordha district, presently residing at Randha under Golanthara Police Station in Ganjam district.

Case Details

Golanthara Police Station registered Case No. 398 dated 01.10.2026 under Sections 85/80(2)/103(1)/3(5) of the BNS, read with Section 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act.

According to the complaint lodged by Upendra Kumar Rauta, his daughter Ambrita Priyadashini Rauta was married to Manas Ranjan Dakhinakabat on June 3, 2020, according to Hindu rites.

The complainant alleged that household articles, gold and silver ornaments and Rs.3 lakh were given at the time of marriage as dowry, followed by an additional payment of Rs.2 lakh. He further alleged that Ambrita was subsequently subjected to physical and mental harassment by her husband and in-laws over demands for additional dowry and that her ornaments were taken away.

Assault and Death

As per the complaint, on September 23, 2026, at around 9:30 PM, the accused allegedly returned home in an intoxicated condition and assaulted his wife, causing serious injuries.

Ambrita was subsequently shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital, Brahmapur, where she remained under treatment. However, she reportedly succumbed to her injuries at around 11:30 PM on September 30, 2026.

Following the death, her father lodged a written complaint at Golanthara Police Station on October 1, 2026, at 9:33 AM, leading to registration of the case.

Police Investigation

Police examined the complainant and recorded his statement under Section 180 of the BNSS.

The investigating team visited the spot, prepared a spot map and, with the assistance of a scientific team, examined the scene and collected relevant evidence.

An inquest was conducted by an Executive Magistrate on the requisition of the SDM, Brahmapur. The deceased’s body was subsequently forwarded to the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, MKCG MCH, Brahmapur, for post-mortem examination. The post-mortem report is awaited.

Police arrested Manas Ranjan Dakhinakabat on October 2, 2026, and forwarded him to the court of the JMFC (R), Brahmapur.

Police have also seized the wearing apparels and biological samples of the accused and deceased for examination.

Further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death and the allegations of dowry-related harassment is underway.
