Auto Driver Arrested After Pedestrian Dies in NH-59 Accident Near Ratanapur

Brahmapur, Oct. 1 (Odishabarta): Brahmapur Sadar Police have arrested an e-auto driver in connection with a fatal road accident that claimed the life of a 58-year-old pedestrian near Ratanapur on NH-59 on Wednesday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Nabin Polai (58).
The arrested accused was identified as Kanhu Charan Das (29), son of Late Kaibalya Das, of Masiakali village under Brahmapur Sadar police limits in Ganjam district.
According to police, the accident occurred at around 5:45 AM on September 30, near New Pizza Hotel at Ratanapur on NH-59. Nabin Polai was reportedly walking along the left side of the main road after returning from the Brahmapur-Aska Road side when a Mahindra electric three-wheeler allegedly being driven rashly and negligently from the Kukudakhandi side hit him.
The victim sustained critical head, facial and multiple bodily injuries. He was immediately rushed to MKCG Medical College and Hospital, Brahmapur, by his elder brother Subash Chandra Polai and local residents. However, attending doctors declared him dead.
On the basis of a written complaint lodged by Subash Chandra Polai (76) of Lalbahadur Marg, Ankarada, under Hinjili police limits, Brahmapur Sadar Police registered Case No. 604 dated September 30, 2026, under Sections 281/106 of the BNS, and initiated an investigation.
Police conducted the inquest and post-mortem examination at the FMT Department of MKCG MCH, Brahmapur, following which the deceased’s body was handed over to his family members.
The offending vehicle, a Mahindra EV bearing registration number OD 07 AZ 3058, along with its registration papers, was seized by police.
The accused driver, Kanhu Charan Das, was arrested at around 2:00 PM on September 30 after observing the prescribed arrest formalities. Police said the grounds of arrest were communicated to him in writing in Odia. He was subsequently forwarded to the competent court.
