Absconding Accused Held in 2025 Attempt-to-Murder Case at Brahmapur

Brahmapur, Sept. 28: Brahmapur police have arrested an absconding accused in connection with a 2025 violent assault case involving allegations of an attempt to murder following a dispute rooted in previous enmity.
The accused, Rakesh Raut alias Kalia (38), son of late Babula Raut of Nimakhandi and presently residing at Laxminagar 1st Lane, Ankuli, under B.N. Pur police limits, was arrested by B. Sadar Police Station at around 12:15 PM on September 28, 2026. He was subsequently forwarded to the competent court.
The arrest relates to B. Sadar PS Case No. 222 dated May 10, 2025, registered under Sections 126(2), 296, 115(2), 118(1), 109 and 3(5) of the BNS.
Assault Following Previous Enmity
According to the police case record, complainant Tuna Das (47), a resident of Bendalia, reported that on May 9, 2025, at around 7:30 AM, his son Amit Kumar Das was allegedly confronted by Rakesh Raut and co-accused Laxman Das and Ghunguru Das over previous enmity.
When Tuna Das intervened, the accused persons allegedly abused the complainant and his son and attacked them with sharp weapons, including kati, and iron rods. The complainant reportedly sustained a serious bleeding injury to his head and fell unconscious at the spot.
Local residents subsequently shifted the injured persons to MKCG Medical College and Hospital, Brahmapur, for treatment.
Investigation Leads to Arrest.
Following the written complaint, B. Sadar Police registered the case and initiated investigation. Police said the investigation included a visit to the scene, examination of the injured person and witnesses, recording of statements under Section 180 of the BNSS, and collection of medical evidence.
Police said co-accused Ghunguru Das was released on bail pursuant to an order of the Hon’ble High Court, while Laxman Das was arrested on September 4, 2026 and forwarded to court.
Investigators subsequently found what they described as prima facie material against Rakesh Raut, who had remained absconding. Acting on the investigation findings, police arrested him on September 28 after observing the prescribed legal formalities.
Further investigation into the case is continuing.
