No Drink, No Drive: Gopalpur Police Seize 15 Vehicles in Road Safety Crackdown

Gopalpur-on-Sea, September 14, 2026:In a road-safety enforcement drive aimed at curbing drunken driving, rash driving and violations of traffic regulations, Gopalpur Police conducted Motor Vehicles Act and drunken-driving checks at strategic locations under its jurisdiction and detained 15 drivers.
During the checking, police seized 15 vehicles, including 14 motorcycles and one car, for alleged violations of provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, as amended.
Police personnel checked driving licences, registration certificates (RC), insurance documents and other applicable vehicle documents. Compliance with helmet and seat-belt rules was also verified. Where alcohol consumption was suspected, drivers were subjected to breath-analyser tests.
The enforcement drive is part of the continuing road-safety efforts of the Berhampur Police District to prevent drunken driving, dangerous riding, rash driving and movement of vehicles without valid documents.
Drunken Driving: A Serious Offence
Under Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act, driving or riding a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or certain drugs is an offence. The provision applies when the alcohol concentration exceeds the prescribed legal limit or when drug consumption renders a person incapable of exercising proper control over the vehicle.
Depending on the circumstances and whether it is a first or subsequent offence, violations can attract imprisonment and/or substantial fines. Cases may also be dealt with by the competent Magistrate as required under law.
Public Appeal: Don’t Drink and Drive
Police have appealed to motorists to treat road safety as a personal and social responsibility.
If you drink, do not drive. Arrange for a designated driver, use a taxi or alternative transport, or stay overnight rather than taking the risk of driving under the influence.
Motorists are also advised to:
Carry a valid driving licence, RC and insurance documents.
Use legally accepted digital document facilities such as DigiLocker or mParivahan, wherever applicable.
Wear a properly strapped, standards-compliant helmet while riding a two-wheeler.
Always use seat belts while travelling in a car.
Never allow an underage or unlicensed person to drive or ride.
Avoid triple riding and wrong-side driving.
Avoid unauthorised vehicle modifications and dangerous riding practices.
Cooperate with police personnel during traffic checking and naka operations.

The Gopalpur–Berhampur corridor witnesses considerable vehicle movement, and careless or intoxicated driving can put not only the driver but also passengers, pedestrians and other road users at serious risk.
The latest enforcement action sends a clear message: road safety rules are not merely formalities—they are designed to save lives.
Police have indicated that enforcement and checking will continue, and persons found violating the law may face proceedings before the competent authority/Magistrate as applicable.
