Taptapani: Sacred Abode of Serenity and Spirituality; President Murmu’s Visit Heralds New Era for Eco-Spiritual Tourism

Taptapani (Sanakhemundi), August 4: Nestled amidst the verdant forests of the Eastern Ghats, Taptapani has long been celebrated as one of Odisha’s most revered destinations, where natural beauty, spiritual heritage and tribal traditions converge in perfect harmony. Famous for its sulphur-rich hot springs and the sacred shrine of Maa Kandhuni, the picturesque hill destination continues to attract pilgrims, nature lovers and tourists from across the country.
Adding a historic milestone to its legacy, the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, visited the sacred tribal shrine during her tour of Ganjam district.
The President offered traditional prayers at the Maa Kandhuni Temple and participated in rituals and Aarti at the nearby Lord Mahadeva Temple, praying for peace, prosperity and the well-being of the people.
Taptapani’s perennial sulphur hot springs are regarded as both a natural wonder and a symbol of faith. For generations, devotees and visitors have believed that bathing in the mineral-rich waters provides relief from various skin ailments. Equally revered is the shrine of Maa Kandhuni, where thousands of devotees seek divine blessings for progeny, prosperity and the fulfilment of cherished wishes.
The destination is also renowned for preserving the rich cultural traditions of the Kandha tribal community. Religious ceremonies continue to be conducted according to centuries-old customs by the community’s Jani priests, reflecting the inseparable bond between tribal culture, spirituality and nature. This unique heritage has made Taptapani not merely a pilgrimage centre but a living symbol of Odisha’s indigenous cultural identity.
The President’s visit holds special significance for the tribal communities of the region. As India’s first tribal woman President, her visit has generated immense pride and emotional resonance among the local people and is being viewed as national recognition of their traditions, faith and cultural heritage.
To further enhance the destination, the Odisha Government is implementing a comprehensive development and beautification project worth approximately Rs.12 crore. The project includes the modernisation of hot spring bathing facilities, improved sanitation, upgraded tourist amenities, illumination, accommodation facilities and other infrastructure aimed at promoting Taptapani as a leading spiritual and eco-tourism destination.
Officials believe the President’s visit will significantly boost Taptapani’s national profile, attracting more tourists and creating new livelihood opportunities for local artisans, transport operators, homestay owners, tribal artists and small entrepreneurs.
The initiative is also expected to showcase Ganjam’s rich natural beauty, spiritual legacy and tribal culture to a wider national and international audience.
Describing the occasion as the beginning of a new chapter for the region, Ganjam District Collector V. Keerthi Vasan expressed confidence that Taptapani would soon emerge as one of Odisha’s premier destinations and one of India’s leading centres for spiritual and eco-tourism.
