Brahmapur, July 26: Badabazar Police have arrested two persons in connection with a brutal sword attack on a grocery shop owner at Shanti Nagar under Badabazar Police Station limits.
The accused have been booked for attempt to murder, assault with a deadly weapon, criminal intimidation, and other offences under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Arms Act.
According to police, the incident occurred on the night of July 17, 2026, at around 9:00 p.m., when Sri Pravat Kumar Malu (41), a grocery shop owner of Haradakhandi, Shanti Nagar 2nd Lane, was present at his shop.
The accused, identified as Simanchal Nahak @ Panda (24) and Ganesh Bisoi (23), allegedly arrived armed with an iron sword, abused the shop owner in obscene language, and attacked him on the head with the intention of killing him.
Police said the victim sustained injuries in the assault. In a desperate attempt to protect himself, he raised his mobile phone, which was smashed during the attack. Hearing the commotion, local residents rushed to the spot, rescued the injured shopkeeper, and the accused fled after allegedly threatening him with dire consequences.
Based on a written complaint lodged by the victim, Badabazar Police Station Case No. 523 dated July 18, 2026, was registered under Sections 126(2), 115(2), 109(1), 296, 351(2), and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, read with Sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act.
During the course of investigation, police seized the iron sword, the alleged weapon used in the attack, from the spot. The weapon was identified by the complainant in the presence of independent witnesses.
Following sustained investigation, police arrested both accused on July 25, 2026. The arrested persons have been identified as;
Ganesh Bisoi (23), son of Late Balaji Bisoi, resident of Haradakhandi Gouda Street, Berhampur.
Simanchal Nahak @ Panda (24), son of Pratap Nahak, resident of Haradakhandi Laxmi Nrusingha Sahi, 8th Lane, Badabazar, Berhampur.
Police said further investigation into the case is in progress to ascertain all circumstances surrounding the attack.
