Berhampur: A chilling crime disguised as tragedy has come to light in Ganjam district, where police arrested Rakesh Acharya of Nimakhandi Pentha on Thursday for allegedly murdering his girlfriend and attempting to cover it up as a road accident.

 Police sources revealed that Rakesh and the victim, Ambika, were in a relationship strained by her insistence on marriage. Police suspect Rakesh plotted the killing to escape the commitment.

On June 7, he allegedly took Ambika to Gopalpur on his bike. While returning, he reportedly pushed her off the Ankuli overbridge, causing fatal injuries. He then tried to portray the incident as a road mishap.

Shockingly, Rakesh himself informed Ambika’s family of her death. But inconsistencies in his account raised suspicion. Ambika’s uncle, Kahnu Jena, lodged a complaint at Baidyanathpur Police Station, prompting police to recover the body and launch a probe.

In some tragic cases, rigid social structures and expectations around marriage cause extreme friction, with perpetrators resorting to fatal measures to escape the pressure or avoid perceived social disgrace.Dr.Vivek added.

Perpetrators often attempt to make homicides look like accidents, suicides, or natural causes to evade law enforcement and social stigma.

Some individuals suffer from a severe lack of empathy and emotional maturity, leading them to act on immediate, violent impulses without considering the consequences.

Evidence gathered during investigation pointed to a planned murder, leading to Rakesh’s arrest. Police said further interrogation is underway to establish the full sequence of events.
