NTPC Talcher Kaniha Successfully Concludes Girl Empowerment Mission (GEM) 2026

Talcher-Kaniha:NTPC Talcher Kaniha successfully conducted the Girl Empowerment Mission (GEM) 2026, its flagship Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, with a grand closing ceremony held on June 6, 2026.

A total of 138 girls from 30 schools located in the peripheral villages of NTPC Talcher Kaniha were selected to participate in the Girl Empowerment Mission (GEM) 2026. The four-week residential summer workshop empowered these young girls through education, skill development, personality enhancement, and confidence-building initiatives.
The programme commenced on May 11, 2026, following a comprehensive baseline survey and medical check-ups of all participants. Throughout the programme, NTPC Talcher Kaniha ensured a safe and nurturing residential environment by providing free lodging, boarding, study materials, daily-use kits, and all necessary facilities for the participants.
GEM 2026 was designed to foster the holistic development of young girls by equipping them with essential life skills, enhancing their self-confidence, and broadening their career aspirations. The participants attended academic enrichment sessions, leadership-building activities, and interactive career counselling workshops that exposed them to diverse opportunities in fields such as defence services, police, sports, and academics.
The programme also featured training in arts and crafts, yoga, and self-defence, helping participants develop creativity, physical fitness, discipline, and self-reliance. To promote social and environmental awareness, the girls actively participated in a Nukkad Natak (street play) during the Swachhta Pakhwada cleanliness campaign and showcased their artistic talents through the “My Green Planet” Painting Competition organized on the occasion of World Environment Day.
Several health awareness sessions were conducted during the camp to educate participants on important issues related to adolescent health, hygiene, nutrition, and overall well-being. The girls were also taken on educational visits to the NTPC Talcher Kaniha power plant and the solar power facility, providing them with firsthand exposure to industrial operations, sustainable energy practices, and technological advancements.
Adding to the overall learning experience, the participants enjoyed recreational activities, including a magic show and movie screenings at the Kaniha Cinema Hall, creating memorable experiences while encouraging social interaction and team bonding.
A special highlight of this year’s programme was the organization of Career Counselling and Parenting Workshops. These sessions aimed to guide students in making informed career choices while also strengthening emotional bonding between parents and children, thereby fostering a supportive environment for the overall growth, development, and empowerment of young girls.
The initiative earned appreciation from district authorities during the programme. The District Magistrate (DM), Angul, and the Superintendent of Police (SP), Angul, visited the GEM camp, interacted with the participants, and commended NTPC Talcher Kaniha for its efforts in empowering young girls through education, life-skill development, and leadership-building initiatives.
The four-week residential summer workshop finally concluded with closing ceremony, whichshowcased the remarkable transformation of the participants through a vibrant cultural programme featuring Sambalpuri folk dance, yoga performances, self-defence demonstrations, drama presentations, and a ramp walk, reflecting the confidence, talent, and skills acquired during the four-week residential camp. Closing ceremony was graced by Shri Vijay Chand, Regional Executive Director (ER-II) & HOP, NTPC Talcher Thermal, as the Chief Guest, in the presence of Smt. Vibha Agarwal, President, Vasudha Mahila Mandal, Shri Ajay Kumar Yadav, HOP, NTPC Talcher Kaniha, and Smt. Archana Yadav, President, Tanvi Sangam.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Guest appreciated the enthusiasm and achievements of the participants and reaffirmed NTPC’s commitment to fostering inclusive growth through education and women empowerment initiatives.
A follow-up session of GEM-programme is also scheduled in upcoming winter.
Through the Girl Empowerment Mission, NTPC Talcher Kaniha continues to strengthen its commitment to community development by nurturing a future-ready generation of confident, capable, and empowered young women.
