Kolkota,( 04/05/26):In a historic upheaval that has redrawn the political map of West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has lost her traditional stronghold of Bhabanipur to the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Suvendu Adhikari. In a result that mirrors the broader state-wide trend, Adhikari emerged victorious by a decisive margin of 15,105 votes, marking the second time he has bested the Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo in an Assembly election.

The defeat in the heart of South Kolkata is a seismic blow to the TMC, which has faced a double shock: the loss of the state treasury to the BJP and the personal defeat of its most iconic leader. Adhikari, who famously defeated Banerjee in Nandigram in 2021, replicated his giant-killer feat in a seat that has been synonymous with the Chief Minister’s political identity for over a decade.

Reacting to the cascading losses, a defiant Banerjee alleged that the mandate was secured through administrative subversion. “It is loot, loot, loot,” she told reporters, reiterating her claims of physical intimidation and technical manipulation at counting centres.

Terming the BJP’s victory “immoral,” she vowed to “seek a counter mandate,” asserting that her party would eventually “bounce back.”

The Chief Minister also alleged that she was “beaten” during the counting process and that CCTV cameras were intentionally disabled to facilitate electoral fraud.

The landslide win for the BJP, which has crossed the 200-seat mark in the 294-member Assembly, was framed by PM Modi as a victory for the Indian Constitution. Speaking from the BJP headquarters in Delhi, the Prime Minister remarked that the “lotus has blossomed everywhere, from Gangotri to Gangasagar,” declaring that Bengal has finally been “freed from fear.”
