Bhubaneswar: Biju Janata Dal (BJD) president Naveen Patnaik on Friday announced the party’s nominees for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections, fielding Santrupt Misra and Dr Datteswar Hota.

Santrupt is a former corporate leader turned politician, currently serving as a National Spokesperson and Political Secretary to Biju Janata Dal (BJD) president Naveen Patnaik

Patnaik confirmed that Misra will contest the assured seat, given the BJD’s strength of 48 MLAs in the Assembly (plus two suspended members). Dr Hota has been nominated for the fourth seat, where no party currently has the numbers to win independently

The Rajya Sabha election in Odisha will be held for four seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with 79 MLAs and support from Independents, is expected to secure two seats comfortably. The BJD is confident of one seat, while the fourth remains open, requiring cross‑voting or support from another party.

By fielding the urologist Dr Hota, the BJD has signalled its intent to contest the additional seat, setting the stage for possible negotiations or alliances with either the BJP or Congress. The outcome will depend on how legislators vote.
