Bhubaneswar,(23/02/25):In a significant boost to healthcare infrastructure in Odisha and Eastern India, AIIMS Bhubaneswar has officially launched its comprehensive Liver Transplant Programme and a cutting-edge Surgical Robotic System.
Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda virtually inaugurated the facilities at the premier institute in the Odisha capital. Bhubaneswar MP Aparajita Sarangi and Union Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava were among those present.
Describing the development as a historic milestone, Nadda said AIIMS-Bhubaneswar has rapidly evolved into a centre of excellence in tertiary care, medical research and academics. He noted that while the institute is already performing kidney and bone marrow transplants, the addition of a liver transplant programme marks a crucial expansion of advanced healthcare services in the region.
The minister said the new facility would make liver transplantation accessible to patients suffering from end-stage liver disease across Odisha and neighbouring states such as West Bengal and Assam, reducing the financial and logistical burden of travelling outside the state.
The institute has set up a modern liver transplant operation theatre, an advanced ICU and a dedicated specialty clinic for post-transplant follow-up. Two successful liver transplants have already been carried out.
AIIMS-Bhubaneswar has also become the first government medical institution in Odisha to operationalise a comprehensive robotic surgery programme.
The technology will initially support Urology, Gynaecology and Paediatric Surgery, enabling minimally invasive procedures, faster recovery and improved surgical precision.
