Book on Kalinga Maritime History Released

Rourkela 2nd Nov : The book ‘Naubanijyaru Mahatab’ authored by Dr Lalatendu Das Mohapatra was released on 2nd Nov 2025 in a book launching ceremony organised by premier literary organization Cultural Academy, Rourkela.
The book is written by the eminent maritime historian of Odisha who is the former Deputy Director of the National Archives of India. It traces the history of Odishan maritime tradition from ancient to modern times. Kalinga was a major maritime power, known for extensive overseas trade and cultural exchange with Southeast Asia and beyond from approximately the 7th century BCE to the 13th century CE. Its maritime success was driven by skilled merchants and a sophisticated understanding of seafaring. This maritime activity played a significant role in spreading Kalingan culture, religion, and ideas across Asia.
Eminent rationalist and Marxist thinker Gagan Bihari Dhal released the book. Dr Pravat Kumar Mallik, retired Professor of History reviewed the book.
The function was presided over by Shri Pasupati Nath Chatterjee, the president of Cultural Academy and Shri Nagen Ku Das proposed vote of thanks. The function was graced by many intellectuals, writers and literary figures of Rourkela.
