Congress Names Ghasiram Majhi As Candidate For Nuapada Bypoll

Ghasiram Majhi As Candidate For Nuapada Bypoll

Bhubaneswar/New Delhi: The All India Congress Committee (AICC) on Tuesday announced Ghasiram Majhi as the party’s candidate for the upcoming by-election to the Nuapada Assembly constituency in Odisha.

In an official statement, the AICC said, “The Congress President, Mallikarjun Kharge, has approved the candidature of Ghasiram Majhi as the Congress candidate for the ensuing bye-election to the Legislative Assembly of Odisha from 71-Nuapada Constituency.”

The move is part of the Congress’s renewed strategy to rebuild its organisational base in western Odisha, particularly in tribal-dominated regions. Majhi, a local leader with a strong grassroots presence, is seen as a candidate who can connect with tribal voters and young constituents.

With this announcement, the Congress has ramped up its campaign in Nuapada, aiming to project itself as a viable alternative to the ruling BJD and the BJP, both of which have consolidated their presence in the region. Party insiders believe Majhi’s local appeal could help the party regain lost ground in the constituency, which has witnessed close contests in recent years.

According to the Election Commission, polling for the Nuapada by-election will be held on November 11 and counting on November 14. The gazette notification will be issued on October 13, while nominations can be filed till October 20. Scrutiny will take place on October 22 and the last date for withdrawal is October 24.

The Chief Electoral Officer of Odisha said the constituency has 2.48 lakh voters and 358 polling stations, including 56 new ones. Webcasting will be done in all booths.
