Lawyers Across Odisha Observe Pen-Down Protest Over Advocate’s Murder
Cuttack: Lawyers across Odisha are holding a complete “Pen-Down” protest after the shocking murder of senior advocate Pitabas Panda in Berhampur on Monday evening.
The Orissa State Bar Council (OSBC) called for this state-wide protest to show unity and demand justice.
Panda was shot dead by unknown attackers outside his home in the Brahmanagar area of Berhampur. The police have started an investigation but have not yet identified the killers.
The OSBC has urged the State government to arrest and punish the culprits within 48 hours. They also want a fast and fair investigation to find out if there is a bigger conspiracy behind the murder.
The lawyers have also demanded Rs 1 crore as ex-gratia compensation for Panda’s family. They are asking the government to set up a high-level Judicial Inquiry Commission to look into the case and report the findings within three months.
In addition, the Bar Council has requested the government to introduce an Advocate Protection Act to ensure safety for legal professionals in Odisha.
The OSBC has called on all top authorities to act quickly and treat this case with seriousness and urgency.
