Justice Reddy Files VP Nomination, INDIA Bloc Shows Strength
New Delhi: Former Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy, nominated by the INDIA bloc for the Vice Presidential election, formally filed his nomination papers on Thursday.
The event saw a strong show of unity from opposition leaders, including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Sharad Pawar, Ram Gopal Yadav, Tiruchi Siva, and Sanjay Raut.
Reddy, who served as Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court and later as a judge of the Supreme Court, emphasized the ideological nature of the contest. “I don’t belong to any political party. I believe everyone would support me… It is the battle of ideology,” he stated before heading to submit his papers.
The Vice Presidential election is scheduled for September 9, with the counting to take place the same day. The post fell vacant following the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21 due to health reasons.
The Vice President is elected by an electoral college comprising members of both houses of Parliament, through a proportional representation system and secret ballot, as outlined in Article 66(1) of the Constitution.
