Odisha to Sail into Tourism Spotlight with 4 New River Cruise Circuits
Bhubaneswar: In a major boost to Odisha’s tourism potential, the Centre has announced the development of four river cruise circuits under the Cruise Bharat Mission. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal revealed the plan in the Rajya Sabha, highlighting Odisha’s rich riverine and coastal landscape as a key asset for sustainable tourism.
The circuits include Bhitarkanika (NW-14), Jobra (NW-64), Lalitgiri-Udaygiri-Ratnagiri (NW-22), and Balasore Hidden Beach (NW-23), each offering unique ecological and cultural experiences. Launched in September 2024 from Mumbai Port, the Cruise Bharat Mission aims to double cruise passenger traffic by 2029.
Earlier this year, the Centre also announced the development of six inland waterways in Odisha for cargo and cruise tourism. These include the Brahmani & Mahanadi Delta (NW-5), Baitarani River (NW-14), and Subarnarekha River (NW-96), among others. All were deemed viable following detailed feasibility studies.
With these initiatives, Odisha is poised to become a premier destination for river-based tourism, blending heritage, nature, and adventure along its scenic waterways.
