Brahmapur : In a sensational case, Ganjam police have arrested a man accused of murdering a married woman and critically injuring her minor daughter at Berhampur. The accused, who had been living under a fake identity, was traced to Karnataka and brought back on transit remand.

According to police, on August 11, complainant Chitrasen Swain reported that his sister, Gayatri Swain (32), was found dead with severe neck injuries at her rented house in Sreema Nagar, 2nd Lane, Lochapada, Berhampur. Her daughter, Neelam (11), was also grievously injured and is undergoing treatment at AIIMS Bhubaneswar.

Investigations revealed that the accused, identified from his Aadhaar card as Sunil Swain (27), son of Damburu Swain of Manikpur, Hinjili Katu, Ganjam, had been in contact with the deceased since 2019 through Facebook. Despite being married, Gayatri developed a relationship with him and they even eloped to Mumbai for 10 days. Though she later returned to her husband, she continued to maintain contact with the accused and even helped him set up a vegetable business in Berhampur.

However, following recent disputes, Gayatri began to ignore him. Feeling humiliated, the accused allegedly attacked her with a sharp weapon on the night of August 10, killing her on the spot and injuring her daughter. CCTV footage confirmed his entry into the house around 9.45 p.m. and departure past midnight.

A special police team tracked the accused to Wadi railway station, Karnataka, where he was arrested on August 16 with the assistance of RPF personnel. He was produced before the Civil Judge & JMFC Court, Sedam, Chittapur, Kalaburagi district, and later brought to Odisha on transit remand. Shockingly, further investigation revealed that the accused’s real name is Santanu Patra (29), son of Shashikanta Patra of Srijanga village, Khantapada PS, Balasore. He is a wanted accused in a 2019 rape and POCSO case involving his own cousins. After absconding, he assumed a new identity and shifted to Mumbai, where he came in contact with Gayatri. Police have sought his remand for further investigation.
